How We Work

We believe in a team approach to serve our clients’ varied needs. Whether sitting down with a financial professional to gain understanding and investment guidance or working with support staff to ensure documentation is in place to keep your accounts running smoothly, we work together to provide comprehensive client services. Our unique background, education, skills, and interests combine to provide top-notch service.

We are locally owned and operated but share a relationship with our broker-dealer, Berthel Fisher. By providing support to our firm through reporting and compliance, trading platform, recordkeeping, and financial planning technology, we are able to utilize the resources of a large company while offering our clients the independent, unbiased personalized services of a small firm.

Meet Our Team

Spencer Mills

Founder, Financial Professional



Spencer has been helping clients reach their financial goals for 15 years. He currently holds his Series 7 and Series 66 licenses and is licensed in life, annuities and long-term-care insurance. Driven by his passion to educate clients and enable them to find the peace that comes with a sound financial plan, Spencer founded Mills Investment Planning in 2014. Spencer enjoys meeting with clients and getting to know their values, interests, and unique needs. His days outside the office are often spent with his wife, Nikki, and his two teenage daughters. They love spending time on the river as a family and can be frequently spotted at Century High School volleyball tournaments and tracks meets.

Joanna Grote

Administrative Assistant, Insurance Licensed


Joanna holds dual roles as administrative assistant and licensed life insurance agent. It’s her friendly voice you will hear when you call, and she is one of the first people to greet you when you stop in the office. She prides herself on offering great customer service and appreciates the opportunity to help clients reach their financial goals. When she’s not at the office, Joanna is busy driving her four kids to activities like wrestling, volleyball, baseball, 4-H, and youth group. Originally from Iowa, Joanna and her husband, Jacob, are enjoying North Dakota and can often be found with their children (loudly) hiking through the Badlands, camping with their two hunting dogs, or out on a lake.

Bobbie Gieser

Administrative Assistant


Bobbie is a recent graduate and is thriving in her transition to the world of financial planning. Her position as administrative assistant keeps her busy updating paperwork, preparing for client reviews, and scheduling appointments. She enjoys establishing connections with clients as she reaches out to them and ensures they feel supported and equipped for their appointments. Bobbie perfects her patience and problem-solving skills caring for her very sweet and mischievous dog, Obi.
